Seat Cover Care: How to Keep Your Covers Lasting for Years

Anyone who invests in high-quality seat covers naturally wants them to look as good as new for as long as possible. The good news: with the right care, custom-made seat covers from Baminger will easily last many years – while reliably protecting the original seat of your vehicle from wear, dirt and damage.

In this guide, you will learn how to care for your seat covers optimally depending on the material, which mistakes you should absolutely avoid, and how often cleaning makes sense.

Why regular care is important

Seat covers in commercial vehicles are subjected to extreme stress every day: dust, sweat, construction site dirt, food residue or moisture take their toll on every material. Without regular care, stains can set in, odours can develop and the material can wear out more quickly.

Our covers are manufactured in Italy from high-quality European fabrics – making them correspondingly robust and easy to care for. Nevertheless, the rule applies: a minimum of attention significantly extends their service life.

Care by material type

Fabric covers (cotton & polyester)

  • Vacuum regularly: Remove loose particles, crumbs and dust with a vacuum cleaner once a week. Use a soft upholstery nozzle.
  • Treat stains immediately: The fresher the stain, the easier it is to remove. A damp microfibre cloth with a little mild cleaning agent is usually sufficient.
  • Deep clean every 3–6 months: Use an upholstery cleaner or foam cleaner. Spray it on, leave it to work briefly and dab it off with a clean cloth.
  • Allow to dry: After cleaning, open the doors or windows and allow the cover to dry completely. Never cover it while still damp!

Faux leather covers

  • Wiping down is often sufficient: Faux leather is particularly easy to care for. A damp cloth with warm water removes most dirt.
  • For stubborn stains: Use mild soapy water or a specialist faux leather cleaner. No solvents or abrasives!
  • Care regularly: Treat with a faux leather conditioner every 4–8 weeks. This keeps the material supple and protects against cracking.
  • Consider UV protection: For vehicles that are often parked in the sun, use a UV protection spray or a sun protection film for the windscreen.

The most important do's & don'ts

Do's – What you should do

  • Treat stains immediately – dried stains are significantly harder to remove
  • Always use gentle, pH-neutral cleaning agents
  • Allow covers to dry completely after cleaning
  • Use microfibre cloths instead of rough sponges
  • For fleets: place a brief care guide in the vehicle for drivers

Don'ts – What you should avoid

  • No aggressive chemicals: Bleach, acetone or solvents will destroy any material
  • Do not machine wash: Most seat covers are not suitable for machine washing
  • Do not scrub: Vigorous rubbing damages the surface and can roughen fibres
  • No steam cleaners on faux leather: The heat can deform or damage the material
  • Do not leave damp for extended periods: Moisture promotes mould growth and unpleasant odours

How often should you clean?

The optimal cleaning frequency depends on the area of use:

  • Construction site vehicles / tradespeople: Vacuum weekly, damp clean monthly
  • Haulage vehicles / long-distance transport: Vacuum every 2 weeks, deep clean every 2–3 months
  • Company vehicles / courier services: Vacuum weekly, clean more thoroughly every 6–8 weeks
  • Cars / occasional use: Vacuum monthly, clean thoroughly 2–3 times per year

Pro tip: rotate covers regularly

Many of our fleet customers order two sets of covers per vehicle right away. While one set is in use, the other can be cleaned and dried. This is particularly practical for shift operations or high vehicle utilisation.

With over 400 vehicle models in our range – from lorries and vans to pickups – you are guaranteed to find the right cover with us. All covers are manufactured Made in Italy from European materials and will be with you within 2–3 weeks.

Conclusion

Caring for your seat covers need be neither complicated nor time-consuming. Regular vacuuming and occasional damp wiping are completely sufficient in most cases. Anyone who follows these simple tips will enjoy their covers for years – while simultaneously protecting the original upholstery and therefore the resale value of their vehicle.
